Getting a library card on the spot at the library

To get a library card, contact the librarian.
Submit to identity document (you can also show it from the Estonian app)
Under 18? You also need consent from a parent or guardian→
Choose whether you want to register an ID card (free of charge) as a reader card or the library reader card:

Reader card and replacement of reader card in the event of card wear, loss, damage or theft	1 € / card
Discounted library card for students, pensioners, people receiving disability pension, people with partial or no work capacity and jobseekers or unemployed people (on the basis of a documentary evidence) and replacement of the discounted library card.	0,50 € / piece
NB! Up to 19 years old (incl.) can get a library card in the campaign Born to read free of charge.

Discount reader card	documents proving the right to receive a discount card
Student	Student card issued in the Republic of Estonia or International Student Identity Card (ISIC), Swedbank Student Card or ISIC Student Electron.
Senior	Pension certificate of the Republic of Estonia and identity document
Disabled person	a document certifying disability issued by the Social Insurance Board (disability card, pension certificate, expert decision certifying disability, certificate of disability category) and an identity document.
Person receiving an invalidity pension	Pension certificate and identity document
A jobseeker or unemployed person whose place of residence is Tallinn.	Decision of the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund and identity document

To upgrade your ID card to a reader card, you need for digital signature ID-card, SmartID or MobileID a valid certificate and PIN codes. In addition you need a valid e-mail address, where we will also send you a digitally signed copy of the library’s rules of use.

Use of a library card

To use the library services, present your library card or ID-card (you can also show it from the Estonian app).
Under 18? Student card is also valid! You cannot use self-service devices only with a student card or ID card in the Estonian app.
The right to use the library needs to be renewed every year. If your card has expired, come to the library or renew your card in My ESTER
If you lose your library card, be sure to report it to the library.
To use someone else’s library card (if you want to send someone else to borrow books with your library card, or lend books to someone else with their library card), you need authorisation↓
