There are internet computers for adults in the reading room and in the music and cinema halls. Children can use the computers in the children’s and youth rooms.
You can borrow for local use:
- battery banks and chargers
- tablet computers
- an electronic drawing board (Wacom Intuos Pro M)
- accessories (monitor, mouse, keyboard, headphones)
- a desktop scanner (CanoScan LiDE 400) and a professional film, photo, slide and document scanner (Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II) – free of charge when used standalone.
You can borrow e-readers from Tallinn Libraries for 21 days without the possibility of extending the return period.
You can borrow from the South City Library BOOX C65ML and BOOX Go Color 7 (Gen II) e-reader.
As a reader of Tallinn Libraries you can:
- borrow from a self-service machine, return books in some libraries, and check your loans, overdue charges and extend the deadline for returning the item(s) if you wish. You can print out a loan slip or send it to an e-mail. It is not possible to borrow items from another service unit or reading room, to borrow items on hold for another patron, or to borrow items or the latest issues of journals from branch libraries. If you have any questions, please ask the librarian.
- with the smart return shelf, you can quickly return items by placing them on the shelf and pressing “Return” on the screen.
- pre-order books (or others) with ESTER status in the e-catalogue in advance via the website order form, e-mail or telephone. Loaning lockers are located at the libraries of Südalinna, Liivalaia, Kännukuke, Laagna, Nõmme, Paepealse, Pelguranna, Pirita, Pääsküla, Väike-Õismäe. After you have placed your order, the library will contact you.
There is an escape hatch on the left side of the Südalinna library building.
We offer free individual and group training in Tallinn Libraries. We will agree on the time and place of the training together. The topics can be adapted and combined. We’ll find the right option for you.

At the Südalinna library
By arrangement with the librarian, you can come to the following training courses at our library:
- basic computer skills, computer graphics, blogging or website design, Canva for beginners, e-journals, e-readers, e-libraries, e-services, basic Facebook skills, graphics boards, ID card, one-to-one reading advice, internet and information resources, MS Office for beginners, use of desktop scanners, online security, library website, genealogy research, beginners’ training on tablets and smartphones, use of artificial intelligence, job counselling, video editing for beginners, beginners’ training in Wikipedia.
- Trainings are conducted in Estonian or English.

Scanning

At the Südalinna library, you can play board games on site or borrow them to take home.
We have Xbox 360 and Playstation 4. You can play console games only on spot. List of games here→
In the music and movie hall of the Südalinna Library you can find music literature and periodicals, sheet music, sound recordings and films – for studying, recreation and entertainment. We also organise music library lessons, concerts and other music and film events.

NB! The Music and Film Hall is open in summer from Mon-Fri 10.00-18.00, Sat 10.00-17.00.
In the music and film hall of the Südalinna Library you will find music literature and periodicals in Estonian and foreign languages, sheet music, sound recordings and films – for study, recreation and entertainment. We also organise musical library lessons, concerts and other music and film events.
In the Music and Film Hall, there are still more ways to discover the world of music. With FINALE, you can convert handwritten sheet music into digital music. Readers can use computers equipped with the music creation software Cubase LE AI Elements 10.5 and the MIDI keyboard M-AUDIO Oxygen49. Come and experiment, create and record your own original sound composition by combining different sound colours! You’ll also be able to create phonograms or improvise on the MIDI keyboard.
In addition, you can borrow musical instruments, play video games in the video room and listen to all the audio recordings (CDs, LPs) in the collection.

We invite kindergarten groups, classes and teachers to visit us for library hours.
- Library hour is an educational and participatory non-formal educational program in the library.
- It lasts about 45 minutes.
- Educational programmes are free of charge for Tallinn educational institutions! (except Culture Ticket classes). For institutions outside Tallinn, the library’s price list applies (except via Culture Backpack). ↓
Tallinn Libraries sell fiction (including children’s literature and poetry) and non-fiction books that are out of date, in large print or in new editions. Book prices start from € 0,15. The books on sale can be consulted at the library. The proceeds of the sale will be used to buy new books.
Libraries occasionally organise book fairs, keep an eye on our news, events calendar or join our newsletter. We also share information on our social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.
Daily book sales on the 1st and 3rd floors (e.g. in the exhibition, music and film halls, in front of the lending desk).
Come alone or with the whole family to the library to play with robots!
For visitors with special needs
- The ramp and the parent and child rooms are temporarily closed until the end of July! We apologize for any inconvenience!
- Hearing aid eye amplifiers are in the service desks, main hall, balcony hall, video room, computer room. Individual neck loops NL-100 can be borrowed from the reading room service lobby.

If you are a resident of Tallinn and are temporarily or permanently disabled and unable to visit the library, you can use the free home delivery service.

Lending service for institutions (roaming service)
We lend books, magazines, sports equipment, etc. to institutions (legal entities). The library offers a mobile library service to medical and care institutions.

- You cannot park near the library. You can park in nearby parking lots or parking areas according to their respective rates.
