Become a volunteer

Volunteers help make services in our libraries more user-friendly and enable us to offer more activities than we could organise on our own. Volunteers of different ages and backgrounds also add value by bringing generations and community groups together and helping to strengthen the community.

Examples of activities

• organise events
• assist in language cafés and run language clubs
• working with children and young people
• introduce the library’s services
• organise shelves
• process new books
• write book reviews

• As a volunteer, you contribute to the community and help people cope better with everyday challenges
• We provide opportunities for self-expression and for testing out new ideas
• We offer the training and support you need to carry out your volunteer activities
• We organise volunteer meetups, appreciation events, and thank-you gatherings
• If needed, we can provide a reference letter to support your applications for jobs or university

According to the Children’s Protection Act, the library checks, in advance, that anyone who comes into contact with children and young people under the age of 18 through their work or volunteer activities is not subject to a restriction on working with minors, as recorded in the criminal records database. The Volunteer Pass is for any volunteer who wants to record the knowledge, skills and experience they have gained through volunteering.

Not all knowledge and skills can be certified by a diploma or certificate, the Volunteer Pass is a good way to record your volunteering experience and use it alongside your CV when applying for jobs, studies or scholarships.
