Tallinn Libraries’ assembling policies
The principles and procedures of the Tallinn Libraries are defined in the Director’s Order “Assembly of materials”.
Our collection is universal in its composition, containing materials in different languages, of different types and of different nature, to meet the needs of Tallinn residents. The library is continuously replenishing the collection, if necessary on the basis of demand (readers’ requests, in line with the library’s replenishment policy) and through back-collection (to fill gaps in the collection, to add exemplars).
The assembly will be selective, with a view to ensuring a thematically balanced and diverse collection. The priorities of the assembly are literature of merit by Estonian authors and translation literature, children’s and youth literature, literature on science, literature by Estonian authors and/or about Estonia, and literature supporting lifelong learning and self-improvement.
The assembling takes into account the needs and interests of different groups of readers and hobbies, the possibilities of the assembling budget, the content of the publication (including topicality, timeliness, objectivity, scientific basis, clarity and scope of coverage), the author of the publication (including the author’s competence in the field), the library’s collection, the form of the collection, including the quality of the binding, the format, the design, the collections of other libraries in Tallinn and Estonia, and the principles of collection management.
We do not collect the full text of laws (except for annotated editions), manuscripts, rare and old books (except in the case of publications relating to the history of the library), single-user publications such as diaries, colouring books, etc., and publications of limited reading and short-term importance such as gift books, calendars, etc.
