For the first time in Tallinn Libraries: you can get into the library even when there are no staff members available

14. April 2026 /

From 14 April, the opening hours of the Tallinn Pirita Library will be extended to include self-service hours, when the library will be open to users without staff. This is a novel solution, which has not been used in this form in Tallinn before.

The self-service library allows readers to use the library from early in the morning until late at night.
Self-service hours are Mondays from 7.00 to 22.00 andTuesday to Friday from 7.00 to 11.00 and 20.00 to 22.00.

During these times you can borrow and return books independently, use computer workstations with a pre-established account or just come and read.

To use the self-service service, you can register in advance at Pirita Library from 15 April. The service is available to readers from the age of 16. You can log in with a reader or ID card. A self-service machine and a smart return shelf are available for borrowing and returning books. It is also possible to pick up items you have previously ordered from the library or from the outdoor lending desk.

During self-service hours, security is ensured by video surveillance and audible alerts to signal the start and end of self-service.

The library will continue to provide its normal services with staff present from Tuesday to Friday from 11-20 and on Saturdays from 10-17.

The procurement of the self-service library solution was supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Public Libraries Accelerator call. This is a pilot project to assess the use of the self-service library and community interest. If the feedback is positive, the project will be extended to other locations.
