Weaving a bookmark in Baltic pick-up style

21. March 2026, 12:00 - 15:00

At the Kalamaja Library: instructor Kristel Vihman

March 21st at 12-15 “Weaving a bookmark in Baltic pick-up style”

Pre-registration required parimusdisain@gmail.com.

We thank the Ida-Virumaa expert group of the Cultural Endowment for their support.

In the fall of 2025 and spring of 2026, we will hold workshops on Baltic pick-up style woven bookmarks inspired by the Estonian Book Year in various Estonian libraries. We were inspired by the slogan of the book year “Estonian Written Language 500”. Weaving a Baltic pick-up style belt pattern is also a kind of Estonian written language, and why not combine these two written languages in a nice way through workshop.
In the workshop, we will instruct participants in weaving a Baltic pick-up style ribbon with pins, from which they will get a nice bookmark. Weaving is done with pin needles, and this gives participants the opportunity to take home their own woven ribbon pieces immediately after the workshop.
If the participant is faster, they can also finish several narrower woven ribbon bookmarks. However, making a Baltic pick-up style woven ribbon bookmark will definitely take the entire 3 hours of the workshop.

Participant age over 14. A parent can also come with a younger child, so you can have a great time doing jointweaving together.

Participation fee 25,-. Includes ready-made threaded tool, use of tool and weaving material, and 3 hours of instruction.

You can come with your child to have quality time through joint activities or come with a friend, sharing tools and a shared sense of success.
The project is led by #kirivööpäev Midsummer’s Day with woven belt! friends and weaving belt teachers.

The bookmarks you plan to make are a nice and practical item and create a pleasant mood later when reading the book, carrying the mood of the Estonian Book Year. In the workshop you will gain enough skills to make a narrower Baltic pick-up style ribbon yourself in the future. Why not give it to friends and relatives as gifts for the upcoming Christmas.
