Mediaradar: Propaganda and History – can you divide the two?

16. April 2026, 17:00 - 19:00
Liivalaia tn 40, 10145, Tallinn

Propaganda and history: can you divide the two? Thursday April 16th at 5PM in Liivalaia Library (Liivalaia 40, Tallinn).

Although it may seem that propaganda is a relatively recently emerged phenomenon, it is far from true. People have often struggled to distinguish between the facts and misinformation. Nowadays, with AI, social media and enormously fast spread of information, it is probably harder than ever before. However, some of the patterns remain the same. During the lecture we will explore the main traits of propaganda through a historical lens and find out what features of propaganda have remained unchanged throughout the centuries.

Ivan Lavrentjev is a communications professional with over a decade of experience across public administration and advisory work. He combines a strong academic background with practical expertise: he holds a BA in History from Tallinn University, earned an MA in Political Science from the University of Helsinki, and is currently pursuing PhD studies at the University of Tartu. He has worked in senior communications roles in the public sector, including at Estonia’s Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Climate, and the City of Tallinn, and has also advised a wide range of companies, NGOs, and cultural institutions. Ivan regularly designs and delivers trainings and public talks on communications, politics, and media literacy in three languages, both in Estonia and internationally.
